Beyond Words: How AI Help Me Design Truly Inclusive Lessons
After more than a decade of teaching across international schools in Thailand — from special education to early years — I’ve seen how beautifully diverse, multilingual classrooms can be. My students have spoken Thai, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, German, Italian, Russian, and more — sometimes all in one room. That diversity has shaped not only how I teach, but how I think about education itself.
When my students began expressing themselves with newfound confidence, I realized that communication was only one part of a much bigger picture. The real challenge was making every lesson as linguistically sensitive, culturally relevant, and developmentally appropriate as the speech activities we had mastered together. That’s when I turned to AI as my creative teaching partner.
Planning lessons in a multicultural, multilingual world
No two children share the same linguistic journey. Some have never heard English before; others are bilingual or even trilingual.
Traditional lesson plans rarely account for this kind of diversity. Most are written for one curriculum, one cultural frame, and one level of English. But our classroom doesn’t fit into that box — and with AI, I realized it doesn’t have to.
Using AI for real classroom planning
Every morning before the children arrive, I open my laptop and ask:
“Create a 25-minute math lesson for a multicultural Reception class in Thailand.
Focus on counting and pattern recognition using visual and hands-on activities.
Include examples that reflect Thai, Japanese, and Italian cultures.”
Within moments, AI generates a draft — complete with vocabulary lists, visuals, differentiated ideas, and play-based prompts. Then I refine it using a structured five-step process to align with our EYFS learning goals.
The same approach works across every subject:
-
Math: culturally familiar counting examples — fruits, toys, or festivals.
-
Topic Studies: blending local and international themes.
-
SEL (Social-Emotional Learning): emotion vocabulary adapted for EAL learners.
-
Fine Motor Activities: arts and crafts linked to real celebrations and identities.
-
Literacy: stories rewritten to include multilingual character names and familiar imagery.
Every plan feels more personal, more relevant, and more inclusive — for every child.
Beyond Early Years: when the toolkit travels
What started as an experiment in our Reception class didn’t stay there for long. Colleagues in elementary, middle, and high school quickly began testing similar AI-assisted planning strategies across their own subjects — from science and humanities to creative writing and robotics.
It worked beautifully. Because the truth is — AI has no boundaries. It adapts to the context you give it. Whether it’s a preschool numeracy center or a high school history lesson, the same framework helps teachers personalize, scaffold, and globalize learning experiences at any level.
What it’s really changed
Using AI hasn’t replaced my planning — it has expanded it.
It gives me time to focus on relationships, creativity, and the subtle art of teaching that no machine could ever replace. It has also changed how my students see learning.
Now, every lesson reflects the world they come from — their festivals, foods, families, and languages. They feel seen. They feel included.
And when I look around our classroom and see children counting in English while whispering numbers to each other in Thai or Italian, I realize something powerful:
AI isn’t taking over education — it’s helping teachers give it back to every child,
in a way that feels like home.
